4 Great Science-Fiction Movies To Watch On Amazon Prime Video Before May

The end of April is near, which means a cascade of movies will be leaving Prime Video soon.

Collected here are four of the best sci-fi films that we will no longer be able to watch for free as part of a Prime subscription once May begins. After that it’ll be time to rent, purchase on physical media, or find them elsewhere.

Starship Troopers (1997)

Starship Troopers pops up in online film discourse every once in a while, sometimes for good reasons, and sometimes for overstated and ill-informed reasons. The positive take is this: Starship Troopers is still talked about nearly thirty years after its release, and its obvious commentary is still relevant (even when people are getting it all wrong).

Life (2017)

Life is always worth a recommendation. By this point pretty much everyone knows about it, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s one of the most solidly entertaining “killer alien loose in a spaceship or space station” movies. Claustrophobic, tense, and exciting, Life is worth rewatching (or watching for the first time) before it leaves Prime Video.

Jurassic World (2015)

Jurassic World: Rebirth is coming out soon, but chances are that even when it’s released, Jurassic World is still going to (arguably) be the second best movie in the franchise. Third at worst. Jurassic World is a grand adventure that echoes the joy of the first Jurassic Park film from 1993, just without the awe and grandeur that accompanied it.

Cherry 2000 (1988)

For a fun bit of sci-fi silliness, you could certainly do worse than Cherry 2000. Set in the then-future of 2017, the story follows Sam Treadwell (David Andrews) as he risks his life to find a replacement companion android after his has a meltdown. He ends up having to venture into the apocalyptic wasteland of Zone 7 with the fiery E Johnson (Melanie Griffith) as his guide. The movie is schlocky, and it’s fun because of its campiness.
