Dead Talents Society begins streaming on Netflix in North America on March 27th, but it’s already a hit internationally.

In the afterlife of Dead Talents Society, a ghost will disappear completely if they are forgotten by the living. This is a major problem for a newly-dead teenager who, as a ghost, doesn’t possess the talent to haunt the living in a memorable way. The solution? Learn to haunt from a washed-up ghost diva who was usurped by her former protégé. Take a look at the trailer below.

The film is a funny and heartfelt satire of celebrity culture, especially from the perspective of movie stars and influencers. It is also a loving homage to horror tropes.

Dead Talents Society began its festival run at the 26th Taipei Film Festival in June of 2024 before debuting #1 in Taiwan theaters in August. The film continued its festival run, garnering praise and winning awards around the world.

At the 2024 Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, Dead Talents Society won the Audience Award and Best Horror Director. Then, at the Sitges Film Festival that took place in October in Spain, the film took home the People’s Choice Award as well as the Focus Asia People’s Choice Award. Finally, at the 2024 Golden Horse Awards in Taipei, Dead Talents Society was the most highly decorated film, earning more nominations (11) and winning more awards (5) than any other film.

Reviews have also been kind. Writing for Daily Dead, Matt Donato said Dead Talents Society is a “delightful paranormal romp” that contains “genuine heart and soul.” Joe Lipsett of Bloody Disgusting gave the movie 4.5 skulls, saying it’s “instant horror comedy classic and one of the best genre films of the year.” Out of all the critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, there is currently only one rotten, giving the movie a 94% fresh rating. Personally, I can’t wait to see it.

If you need more convincing to watch, here’s a music video for the movie’s theme song. It won Best Original Film Song at the Golden Horse Awards.

Dead Talents Society comes from Taiwanese director and co-writer John Hsu, whose previous film was the excellent video-game adaptation Detention (2019). Starring as the rookie ghost in Dead Talents Society is Gingle Wang, who also starred as Fang Ray-shin in Detention. So, if you enjoyed the previous collaboration by John Hsu and Gingle Wang, you’ll definitely want to check out their new film.
