The Autopsy of Jane Doe is one of the best horror films of the 2010s. It is an insidious film, with the terror creeping up on you as the mystery of an unidentified woman’s death is pieced together during her autopsy. If you’ve never seen it, you need to check it out. But if you’re planning to watch it on Netflix, March 14th is the last day it will be available on the streaming service.

The less you know about the movie before watching it, the better. The mystery of what happened to the Jane Doe is riveting, and it’s best to go into it blind. So, don’t read any reviews or plot synopses that are more than a few sentences long. If you do want a small sample of what to expect, the trailer below is safe enough to watch.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe was originally released in 2016. The film was directed by André Øvredal, the director of other standout horror movies including Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019), Troll Hunter (2010), and The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023).

The movie begins when the body of an unidentified woman is discovered at the scene of a multiple homicide. The circumstances of her appearance are unusual, so the Jane Doe is taken to the town’s coroner so he can determine the cause of death. Then things get spooky.

The film stars Brian Cox (Succession, Adaptation) and Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild) as Tommy and Austin, the father and son duo who are performing the autopsy. Also featured are Ophelia Lovibond as Austin’s girlfriend Emma, and Olwen Kelly as Jane Doe.

If you’re looking for more smart and unsettling thrillers on Netflix, check out Incantation (2022) and Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016). But watch The Autopsy of Jane Doe first, because it’ll be gone soon!
