Wicked City is an all-time favorite.

4 Best Horror Anime Streaming On Tubi Right Now

Tubi might not be the streamer with the MOST horror anime, but it does have some classics!

By

Tubi has a surprisingly large selection of anime. And the best part is, it’s all free to watch!

They don’t have a ton of newer titles, but, of the older titles Tubi offers, there are definitely some gems. As a horror fan always on the lookout for anime on every streaming service I use, I’ve selected a few of my favorite horror anime titles currently available on Tubi.

Hakaba Kitaro (aka Graveyard Kitaro, 2008)

Hakaba Kitaro (aka Graveyard Kitaro, 2008)
Hakaba Kitaro is a standalone series, and it is not considered canon with the various GeGeGe no Kitaro anime series. The story of this series is closer to the original manga.

Kitaro is the last of the Ghost Tribe, a long line of spirits and creatures whose existence predates humans. Raised by a human but with roots in the world of yokai (Japanese supernatural entities), Kitaro is caught in the clash between his two worlds. Hakaba Kitaro is based on the manga from the 1960s which is also known as GeGeGe no Kitaro, and the visual style of this anime adaptation does a great job of emulating a retro look through a modern lens.

Boogiepop Phantom (2000)

Boogiepop Phantom (2000)
Boogiepop Phantom has a superb opening song.

Boogiepop Phantom is a wonderfully odd horror series. The tone is difficult to describe, but if you’re familiar with the more popular Serial Experiments Lain (1998), it feels similar to that. So, dark and dreamlike, with an overarching sense of unease. The main story is a bit obscure for the first few episodes, but as you watch different characters go through horrific ordeals, the pieces start to fall into place.

Doomed Megalopolis (1991)

Doomed Megalopolis (1992)
Doomed Megalopolis is a four-part series, with each part running between 40-45 minutes.

Doomed Megalopolis is one of the standout horror anime of the 1990s. Adapted from the novel Teito Monogatari by Hiroshi Aramata, the story is set in the early twentieth century and is about a spiritual battle for the future of Tokyo. One man wants to destroy the city as retribution for his ancestors, and he plans to use a woman with psychic abilities as a conduit for a vengeful spirit. Doomed Megalopolis goes into some very dark places before the tale is finished.

Wicked City (1987)

Wicked City (1987)
Wicked City contains lots of violence, gore, and sex.

The lone movie in this list is a personal favorite of mine. As someone who really got into anime in the 1990s, Wicked City was one of the anime movies I discovered around the same time as classics like Demon City Shinjuku (1988) and Ninja Scroll (1993). Wicked City is my third favorite in that short list, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t good. The story of secret agents trying to stop terroristic threats from a demonic realm is great, and the designs of the creatures are fantastic.
