The Highest Rated Thriller Of 2025 Starts Streaming Tomorrow (February 18) – And It’s 94% On Rotten Tomatoes

Why is it heading home so soon?

Sophie Thatcher stars in Companion.

Companion has only been in theaters for just over two weeks, but it’s already heading to digital platforms. Though the move isn’t because of a lack of theatrical success.

Companion is rated higher than other recent favorites.

Companion (2025)
Companion has some fabulous images throughout.

So far in 2025, Companion is the highest rated newly-released horror movie. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently has a 94% critics’ score and an 89% audience rating. That beats all other wide-release horror films so far this year, topping Wolf Man, Heart Eyes, and Presence.

Companion also beats some of the best movies of last year, The Substance and Nosferatu, in both critics and audience scores. The Substance currently sits at 89% and 75% respectively, and Nosferatu is at 84% and 73%. Is Companion really that good? Well, it is very entertaining, and you’ll have an additional way to watch it and judge for yourself on February 18, 2025 when Companion begins streaming at home.

Don’t worry, this is the teaser trailer which doesn’t give too much away about the story.

Companion stars Sophie Thatcher (Heretic, Yellowjackets) and Jack Quaid (The Boys, Scream 5). If you haven’t seen the trailers, I won’t spoil one of the more interesting early reveals in the movie, but the basic premise involves an unusual relationship between Thatcher and Quaid’s characters. Josh (Quaid) is keeping many secrets from Iris (Thatcher), and he orchestrates a plan during a vacation trip that leads to death and, potentially, liberation.

The film is great, and it absolutely deserves to be on every horror and thriller fan’s must-watch list. But if it’s so good, why is it heading to digital platforms so quickly? It was released in most regions worldwide in the final days of January, barely over two weeks ago. In that time it has amassed over $33 million on an estimated $10 million budget. That’s a success, so a lack of box office interest up to this point doesn’t seem to be a huge factor in the decision to go to streaming.

Why go to streaming so soon?

Companion (2025)
You’ll be able to watch from home soon.

My best guess? There are two reasons to make the move this early. First, the buzz around Companion is still high, and it isn’t a bad idea to supplement an already successful theatrical run with a premium video on demand release. If you look at the numbers on The-Numbers.com, Companion actually did significantly better per theater in its third weekend when compared to its second. Word of mouth is strong, so the studio probably wants to take advantage of that digitally.

The issue is, even though Companion is increasing in per-theater revenue, it was removed from more than 2,000 theaters at the start of its third week. Why? Because there are lots of new movies being released right now. This leads into reason number two for the digital movie: There are movies coming out that will cut into its box office.

Heart Eyes released the week after Companion. The Monkey hits theaters this Friday. Both of those movies share a crossover audience with Companion. It doesn’t stop there. We’re in the midst of a run where theater space is limited thanks to a lot of big movies coming out week after week.

Captain America was just released, Love Hurts was out on February 7th, Last Breath, Mickey 17, Novocaine, Opus, Death of a Unicorn, and The Woman in the Yard are all coming soon. The list goes on, and that doesn’t even get into the multiple children’s movies taking up theatrical real estate. It’s a lot for movie fans to keep up with, and it’s a lot for theaters to try to keep screening week after week. It just makes sense to transition to streaming while Companion is still on everyone’s mind.

Where to watch Companion.

Companion (2025)
Don’t miss Companion!

Companion releases on digital platforms on February 18, 2025. As of this writing, Amazon Prime Video and Fandango at Home have the movie listed with a preorder price of $24.99 in the United States. It is unclear if it will be available to rent digitally right away, but if it is, then it will surely be at a premium VOD which is usually around $19.99 for new releases from bigger distributors.

There are also three featurettes included, the titles of which you can see in the Fandango at Home listing. For those of us who prefer to wait for a physical release, Companion is scheduled for a 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD release on April 11th, 2025.
