Tommy Dewey and Melissa Barrera star in Your Monster.

Melissa Barrera’s Delightfully Romantic Monster Comedy Streams On Max In January

'Your Monster' is your new favorite rom-com about a monster in a closet.

If you missed Your Monster when it was first released last year, you’re in luck. The adorably gruesome romantic horror-comedy begins streaming on Max on January 24th, 2025!

Your Monster stars Melissa Barrera as Laura Franco, an actress who feels like her world is falling apart. While she was in the hospital recovering from treatment for a cancer diagnosis, Laura’s boyfriend dumped her. To make matters even worse, her ex-boyfriend is directing a play that he and Laura developed together, in which Laura was promised the leading role. But now she’s on her own, and she’s out of play.

Laura is forced to move back into her childhood home as she tries to get back on her feet. There, she discovers something she’d completely forgotten about: a monster that lives in her closet. Laura and the monster don’t get along at first, but as they rekindle their forgotten friendship, they might discover something more igniting between them.

Your Monster only received a limited theatrical release, and its original streaming release was rather quiet. But for those who have seen it, Your Monster is a treat. Melissa Barrera is fantastic, beautifully showcasing her range as an entertainer from comedy, to horror, to drama, and even her talents as a singer and dancer (fans of In the Heights already know how good she is).

Not to be outdone, Tommy Dewey as the monster is wonderful. He’s charismatic even when he’s being monstrous, and it’s a joy watching as his dark, cynical heart is melted.

And the final scene of Your Monster? Perfect. Dark, unsettling, cathartic, and perfect.

Your Monster is truly an underseen gem that deserves to finally get more eyes on it. Hopefully now that it’s coming to Max it will finally get the recognition it deserves.
