‘Blade Runner 2099’ Could Premiere On Amazon Prime Video In 2025

Rumors about the forthcoming Prime Video series abound.

Though no official release date has been announced, the long-awaited continuation of the Blade Runner franchise is likely to come out before the end of the year.

Why are we confident that Blade Runner 2099 will be on our screens in 2025? Well, per DiscussingFilm, filming for the first season wrapped at the end of December, and history tells us that shows of this magnitude can take around a year to go from wrapping-up filming to premiering on TV. For example, Fallout wrapped filming late March 2023, and it debuted just barely over a year later in early April 2024.

Other shows with sizable post-production workloads have taken less time. The first season of Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time wrapped filming in May 2021, and the first episode aired just six months later in November of the same year. Six months for Blade Runner 2099 sounds like an overly optimistic goal, but seeing it by the end of 2025 seems completely reasonable.

Blade Runner 2099, as the title suggests, will take place fifty years after Blade Runner 2049, the latest movie and the last story so far in the timeline. According to Variety, Michelle Yeoh stars in the series as Olwen, a Replicant nearing the end of her life. A much-copied “official” plot synopsis goes into slightly further detail, but depending on the outlet you’re reading the synopsis on (which is almost never properly credited), it might say that Michelle Yeoh’s character is either a Replicant or Blade Runner. Possibly she’s both?

Regardless of the hazy story details, we know that Hunter Schafer (Euphoria, Cuckoo) will co-star alongside Yeoh in the series. The latest casting news also tells us that Tom Burke (Praetorian Jack in Furiosa) and Maurizio Lombardi (Inspector Pietro Ravini in Netflix’s Ripley) have also joined the cast which additionally includes Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Katelyn Rose Downey, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, and Matthew Needham.

As for the themes of the series, Ridley Scott, the director of the 1982 Blade Runner movie and an executive producer on the new series, has said that Blade Runner 2099 “circles the idea of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World.” What this means in terms of story and plot is anyone’s guess at this point, but hopefully we’ll all be able to find out for ourselves before the end of 2025.
