‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Season 3 Sneak Peek Gives Us A Glimpse Into The Future—But Don’t Trust What It’s Telling You
Fans of ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’, rejoice—we have our first sneak peek into the third and final season, which will be released on Prime Video in July. The photos give us a glimpse at our beloved characters, but if you look closely, you might notice hints that this final season includes a time jump, meaning our characters will be older and more established in their relationships than when we last saw them.
That being said, the story these stills are trying to tell us might not be exactly what it seems.
Fans of the books won’t be surprised about the time jump—after all, the third book takes place a few years after the second, when Belly (Lola Tung) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalengo) are both firmly into their college years. The released photos from this season seem to confirm that we’ll still experience the time jump, thanks to the still of Belly sitting in an empty dorm room and another photo of Conrad (Christopher Briney) dressed in medical garb—presumably now a med school student, like he is in the books.
That being said, the author has said that audiences should expect surprises, and I imagine that’s true—it’s hard to imagine the show will follow the exact set up of the final book, especially with past seasons diverging slightly from the original storylines. But though the stills show plenty of cosy moments between Belly and Jeremiah, who have presumably been in a relationship for several years now, there’s likely a storm coming their way—we just probably don’t know exactly what that is yet. After all, without the tension involving both brothers, what story is left to tell at all?
No sneak peek is going to delve specifically into the season’s conflicts, but that being said, I do think seeing Belly and Jeremiah so seemingly in love is a bad sign for Jellyfish shippers. On the other hand, Conrad is giving very little limelight here, which makes me think they’re trying to play him off as the underdog or keep his storyline under wraps—probably because he poses a bigger threat to Jeremiah and Belly’s relationship than the showrunners would like us to know.
Am I biased? Absolutely! I firmly believe Belly and Conrad are endgame, but I’d also like to believe I understand a thing or two about storytelling, too. Wherever the show ultimately leads us, and whoever Belly ultimately ends up with, trust that Conrad’s chapter hasn’t quite come to a close yet—after all, the last time we saw him, he was confessing his love to Belly. While he’s the kind of character who’s willing to admit defeat and walk away when he believes he isn’t wanted, he’s not the kind whose emotions change that easily.
Belly and Conrad have more story left than this sneak peek is willing to tell—in so many ways, the two are infinite.
