Though Selena Gomez has released a few new songs this summer (tbh “Fetish” is my jam), she’s been noticeably MIA for the most part. She didn’t seem to spend much time on promotions and aside from her paparazzi pics with beau The Weeknd, she’s been noticeably absent from the media.

But Gomez has finally come out to her fans about just why she’s kept out of the public eye lately, and the reason is actually kind of heartbreaking.

Gomez captioned the photo of her lying in a hospital bed with this:

I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis. Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made. Who is Francia Raisa, you may ask? She’s one of Gomez’s best friends — and you may also recognize her as Adrian from The Secret Life of the American Teenager. How’s that for a supportive celeb friendship?

Gomez has been publicly fighting Lupus, an autoimmune disease, since 2015. In 2016, she took a break from working because of the anxiety the disease caused. Since then, she has become an advocate for the disease.

Hopefully Gomez was able to rest and recover smoothly. And when she’s ready, I hope she comes out of this with some of her best music yet. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
