‘The Severed Sun’ Promises Folk Horror At Its Bloodiest

By

Folk horror thrives on deep-rooted fears—land, community, and the darkness within us. The Severed Sun looks ready to deliver.

In Dean Puckett’s feature debut, Magpie, a preacher’s daughter, kills her abusive husband and awakens a vengeful monster in the woods. As her father pushes her back toward faith, the creature stalks the village, sparking a brutal witch hunt with Magpie at the center.

The trailer teases stunning cinematography, eerie landscapes, and a sharp critique of gender, religion, and societal hypocrisy. And if that brutal axe-to-the-hand shot is any clue, it’s not holding back on gore.

Releasing May 16, 2025, The Severed Sun looks like a must-watch for folk-horror fans.
