This police inspector’s harrowing tweet about domestic abuse is making waves online, and for good reason: not only is it creepy, but it shows just how serious the problem can be.

Police entered a home in the London to find a 21 kitchen knives lodged into the stairway and a stray bullet resting on one of the steps. One of the officers took a picture of the scene, which Inspector Jack Rowlands uploaded as a reminder that domestic violence is no joke.

After taking in the disturbing scene, officers arrested a 42-year-old man for common assault.

Rowlands later added:

And he was right — people were shocked.

But some people pointed out that what may seem like a horror movie to some is others’ reality.

Hopefully the picture will get people talking about the realities of domestic violence. While you probably won’t find this particular scene in every abuse victim’s house, that doesn’t mean that their horror and fear is any less real. One in three women and one in four men have been physically abused by a partner, which is a huge percentage of the population. Just because there aren’t knives lodged in the stairs doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
