Why Being Single On Valentine’s Day Is No Different Than Literally Any Other Day

So here’s another year of being single on Valentine’s Day. As early as the beginning of February, you are seeing hearts everywhere – in your workplace, on the streets, in your newsfeed, at the coffee shop where you buy your coffee every morning. And you feel even more single than you actually are. But really, being single on Valentine’s Day is no different than literally any other day.

Maybe you’ve recently just broken up with your ex. Or you have been single AF for years now. It doesn’t matter. You’re single, and that’s okay. Some people think that Valentine’s Day should be the day for sweethearts, lovers, couples, whatever the fuck they call it, and that it should be about gifts and flowers and chocolates and spending all that money on crap. And here you are, feeling bad that you are going to be alone (and very single) on Valentine’s Day.

Snap out of it.

You’re single and that’s a wonderful thing.

AND.. You’re not alone. A lot of people are feeling exactly the way you feel. Does that make you feel better? Nope. Does that make you feel less single? Not at all. But, at least, you’re aware that, right now, you are not the only one in their PJ’s, eating pizza and cuddling with their cats.

We always just settle in life. We settle for really crappy jobs, bad relationships, extremely toxic people, you name it. Being single is the time we change that. You have to start telling yourself that you are worth so much more than you think you do, because you are wonderful, you are amazing, and you can do great things in life. And yes, that is even if you’re single.

Just because it’s Valentine’s Day and couples are out there showing off their love for each other doesn’t mean they are happy. If you’re with someone, every single day could be Valentine’s day. There won’t be only a certain day when you’d be extra romantic; you can be romantic all year long. And just because you’re single on Valentine’s Day doesn’t mean you’re unhappy. Being single now simply means you just haven’t found the right person yet. And one day, you will. But right now, try to embrace the life of being single.

It’s true, it’s nice to receive flowers and have someone to go out with on Valentine’s Day, someone to take care of and to argue with, someone to hold hands with and someone to disagree with. But one day, you will realize that there are so many things you will miss about being single. Stop waiting to be happy, and stop wishing for someone to be there to complete you. You should be happy now, and you should know that you are the only person you need to be able to feel complete. Fuck the idea of needing a lover to be happy. That should not be how it works. You need to be able to love yourself first before you can give your love to someone else. You should even be excited that you’re not with just anyone right now, that you’re not settling, that you are able to wait for the perfect person.

Couples try to make Valentine’s Day as special as possible, but YOU can make every single special.

It doesn’t matter what day it is, as long you are grateful. You should spend each day appreciating the little things about yourself, because those are the things that make you who you are. And one day, someone will appreciate them with you, and accept all your flaws and insecurities. But for now, you need to love yourself as much as you can and make yourself aware that you are an amazing person, even if you’re single.

Because Valentine’s day isn’t just for sweethearts, lovers, couples, whatever the fuck they call it. It’s for you, too. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
