20 Things You Need To Do To Find Yourself

If you don’t have a pet, get one. Or at least a plant or two. Take care of them like they’re part of your soul.

Identity is a major part of being a millennial. We seem to find ourselves stuck in ruts often as we learn who we are.

And maybe those ruts come so frequently because we haven’t figured out the right vices to really learn about ourselves. I’ve come up with a bucket list of 20 of the best ways to really start to figure yourself out.

1. Go on one major adventure solo. It could just be a day out on the major town closest to you, or it could be a backpacking adventure through Europe, but go.

2. Start volunteering. Dedicate time every week to serve in different capacities. Seeing the world on so many different levels will be so great for your searching soul.

3. Set up an online dating profile, and go some of the dates. This will show you what kind of people you really want to spend your life with.

4. Commit yourself to wake up and watch the sunrise for however long you need. Ponder the world as the sun comes up on the horizon.

5. Find someone to mentor. You’ll learn so much about yourself as you help someone else.

6. Try to write a book. Have your only goal be to get to the end, not to write a best seller.

7. Name one thing you’d never do, the one thing that is way too far out of your comfort zone—then go do it. You’ll find your comfort zone is menial.

8. Move somewhere you have no connections.

9. Learn to speak a different language.

10. Try different styles out. Our style really reflects who we are, so trying out different ones may show you parts you’ve been missing all along.

11. Get a gym membership, or take some free community classes. Getting fit will help you find your true limits, your true potential, and your true self.

12. If you don’t have a pet, get one. Or at least a plant or two. Take care of them like they’re part of your soul.

13. Go skydiving or bungee jumping. You’d be surprised the things you realized in the heat of adrenaline!

14. Smile every day, especially when you don’t want to.

15. Forgive the people who’ve wronged you—every single one of them. In person. In a letter. Let them know you forgive them.

16. Change up your diet. The food you eat really does impact you in ways you’d never expect.

17. Write letters to everyone who’s ever been important to you—then send them (if you can).

18. Pay it forward.

19. Start asking some random people out to coffee. Hear their stories, and learn from them.

20. Take time to close yourself off from everything—people, the internet, television—and just spend time with yourself. You’ll come to amazing realizations about who you are when all you have is yourself. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
