I Know It Sucks, But You Can’t Make Someone Love You

Aidan Meyer

I wish there was a more elegant way to put it. I wish there was something I could say that would magically mend your broken heart. Something instant. Something miraculous.

The truth is, there’s not. You can’t make someone love you. And it sucks. It hurts and is confusing and feels like your emotions are trying to destroy you.

You are not in charge of how someone else feels.

You can’t convince someone to care. You can’t persuade them to look at you the way you look at them. You aren’t responsible for proving how lovable you are – how worthy you are.

All you can do is focus on yourself. Give yourself time. Letting go is never easy, but sometimes it’s the only option.

What are you waiting for? For someone to change their mind? For something unrequited to become, well, requited?

Stop. Stop wishing. Stop hoping. Stop sitting around waiting.

Someone will come along and you won’t have to beg them to see you. Someone will meet you and all your wonderful attributes will be apparent. Someone who won’t be able to imagine a life without you. Someone who gives you the love you’ve been desperately aching for.

For now, give yourself permission to move on. You can’t make someone love you back.

Love yourself instead. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
