11 Totally Awkward Things Not To Do When Meeting His Friends

1. Don’t be someone you’re not.

Be yourself. If you pretend in order to please, you aren’t doing anyone any favors. They will eventually figure out who you really are further down the line anyway, so be yourself from day one.

2. Don’t over obsess about what they’re thinking.

They most likely won’t take notice to the little things that you overanalyze in your head. For example, they don’t take notice to the amount of salt you put on your food, nor do they care. Feel free to do what you want without the constant worry of their judgment, because they most likely have plenty of other things to worry about.

3. Don’t over do the PDA.

He’s with his friends, he doesn’t need you hanging on his shoulder the entire night. Chances are his friends might become annoyed with that anyway, loosen the leash a little.

4. Don’t be too distant.

While you don’t want to be attached to him at the hip, you also don’t want to be a completely distant bitch. Don’t be too clingy, but don’t be at the other side of the bar flirting with some med student who just offered to buy you a drink. Find the balance.

5. Don’t feel self-conscious.

Easier said than done, but try your best to be confident. They are his friends, not raging rottweilers ready to tear you apart. Say what you want to say, and do what you want to do without feeling like you’re weird or awkward, which brings me to my next point…

6. Don’t make things weirdly awkward and tense.

Treat the day you meet his friends like any other day you’d hangout with him. It’s basically the same, just a few more people along for the ride. The more the merrier, right? Again, they’re his friends, they aren’t werewolves.

7. Don’t ask them anything too personal.

You are just meeting them, and while you want to be comfortable and confident, asking them really personal questions might come off a little too strong. You don’t need to know why his friend broke up with his ex, or whether or not he has ever been to jail. You don’t know his friends well enough yet, which could result in some very unexpected answers that you won’t have any idea how to respond to. “Oh, so you went to jail for tax evasion…hmm. Interesting…?”

8. Don’t insult them.

Even if you’re joking, upon first meeting them, they don’t know your sense of humor or sarcasm well enough. Save the insulting jokes for a later time. “Nice tie,” (in a sarcastic tone) might not set the greatest first impression.

9. Don’t overstay your welcome.

It might be a little weird to invite yourself places, or to stay where you’re not welcome, especially if you just met these people. When they talk about their planned vacation this summer, don’t ask if you can join. If they want you there, they will invite you, and don’t be insulted if they don’t. They aren’t your friends, they’re his.

10. Don’t drink to calm your nerves.

Drink because you want to, don’t drink for the sole reason of throwing your inhibitions to the wind. While your intentions might be to take the edge off, before you know it, you’re head is in a toilet bowl and your lipstick stain is tinted with something that no longer resembles fire engine red. Save the fancy shots with dirty obscure names for another night. Ordering a round of drinks named “blowjobs” will most likely not end well.

11. Don’t worry about their inside jokes.

They will most definitely have their inside jokes, and you most definitely will have no idea what they are talking about when they do. You have inside jokes with your own friends, don’t worry about being on the outside of his. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
