The Girls Who Aren’t Like Other Girls

You know those annoying girls who aren’t very girly, the ones who know everything about college football rankings and crack crude jokes, and always seem to have more male than female friends? Well, I’m one of them.

No, it’s not an act and no, I’m not trying to be one of the guys; it just comes naturally.

I happen to truly love the sport of football and yeah, maybe that stems from Sundays on the couch with my dad (who claims my first word was actually touchdown) but so what? Why does that make my football obsession any less legitimate? I do prefer a craft beer with a good steak over a glass of wine and a salad. I was taught to appreciate a hearty meal growing up but that doesn’t make me any less of a girl because of it.

I still love to wear a pretty dress and get all dolled up for a night out, and it makes me feel happy when someone tells me I look good, not just when they’re surprised to see I own a dress.

Being friends with guys has just always been easier for me than being friends with girls. My honesty and straightforwardness are traits that have tended to be more appreciated by guys than girls but that doesn’t mean there aren’t awesome girls out there who are just as opinionated and honest as I am.

I’m friends with those girls so I know they exist. When I was in college, my best friends were guys and constantly people would ask us if we were dating. The answer was always no because, ew. Plus, they usually had girlfriends during the time of our friendship, ones that hated me even when they’d never met me only because I have boobs, yet I was the one helping their clueless man remember birthdays and anniversaries. I hope my next boyfriend has a girl best friend because then I’ll know he will never get me anything lame.

Ladies, just because I’m friends with a lot of guys doesn’t mean I’m sleeping with them and it certainly doesn’t mean I’m trying to steal your boyfriend if I hang out with him. I’m not using my love of sports to get in someone’s pants, I promise.

And guys, my laughter at your dirty jokes and the fact that I will help you get any girl in the bar doesn’t excuse your ignorance of my femininity. I am a good friend and will be one to you but not if you abuse it. Just because I don’t have an ulterior motive to make you my boyfriend doesn’t mean you get to walk all over me.

Yes, I get really into NCAA sports and I know a lot more about a team than just their uniform colors and no, I probably won’t order a salad if we go on a date but I am a warm blooded, full blown girl. Please don’t forget that. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
