Hulu Locks Down ‘Prison Break’ Reboot From Elgin James – A New Chapter For The Hit Series Begins

By

Hulu has officially ordered a reboot of Prison Break, the long-running drama series that was one of the defining shows of the 2000s. The reboot, which will take place in the same world of the original but with an entirely new cast and story, will be a new twist on the world of Prison Break, with a wholly original story, and all new cast according to latest reports.

Written, showrunned, executive produced, and directed by Mayans M.C. co-creator Elgin James, the Prison Break reboot stars Emily Browning as Cassidy, an ex-soldier who takes a job as a corrections officer at one of the most dangerous prisons in America to prove just how far she’ll go for someone she loves. Completing the reboot’s main cast are Drake Rodger as Tommy, Lukas Gage as Jackson, Clayton Cardenas as Michael “Ghost,” JR Bourne as Junior, Georgie Flores as Andrea, and Myles Bullock as Darius “Red.” The pilot also stars Priscilla Delgado, Ray McKinnon, Margo Martindale, Donal Logue, Lili Taylor, and Sylvester Powell.

The pilot was shot in West Virginia in June 2025, and 20th Television is producing the new series (the same studio that made the original so we have some high hopes). In addition to James, executive producers include Paul Scheuring, the creator of the original Prison Break; Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz, who all also served as executive producers on the original series run.

Prison Break first aired on Fox from 2005 to 2009 as a high-octane drama about loyalty, sacrifice, and betrayal, centered on structural engineer Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) and his brother Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell). The pair were torn apart by a failed bank robbery that landed Lincoln on death row. Scofield stages an elaborate plan to break his brother out, but his plan is just the beginning of one of television’s most binge-worthy serialized thrillers. It earned a Golden Globe nomination and a devoted international fan base that followed the series’ twists and turns for nearly 90 hours of TV. Prison Break was revived for a fifth and final season in 2017, after a television movie, The Final Break, and a spinoff series, Proof of Innocence.

There were other plans for a follow-up on Fox years later, but those were canceled in 2019. In recent years, streaming has given new life to Prison Break: In August 2024, Nielsen data showed it was the most-watched show in the U.S. The reboot will stream on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally, where all of the prior seasons of the original series are already available.

A release date has yet to be set for Hulu’s Prison Break reboot, though industry sources are reporting the new series could be coming as early as 2026. It is a return to one of television’s most heart-pounding worlds, but with a completely new vision by a completely new storyteller. The pressure is on for the reboot to be just as buzzy and exciting as the original, but the franchise’s revival at Hulu reflects Hollywood’s current taste for reboots and retreads that defined the early network era.
