A Couple On ‘Love Is Blind’ Season 9 Bonded Over The Belief That LGBTQ+ Is A ‘Fad’

"When kids start having these thoughts, like, too young, and maybe I'm old-fashioned, but it's a concern for me because, who's telling you that?"

Season 9 of Netflix’s hit reality dating show Love is Blind has now begun. The first chunk of episodes released on the streaming service follow Colorado singles as they date in the “pods” — sequestered rooms that allow the daters to talk to each other (and ostensibly get engaged) without ever laying eyes on each other. The purpose is to focus on personality and compatibility — even bonding over controversial politics.

Annie talks about how she’d react to having a gay child on Love is Blind season 9.

That’s what happened with 31-year-old hair salon owner Annie Lancaster and 28-year-old luxury watch dealer Nick Amato. The two were getting to know each other in the pods when Nick asked Annie how she would react if one of her future children came out to her as LGBTQ+? After a long pause, Annie answered “No matter what, I’m always going to love my kids but I can’t tell you I would be the first person to be like ‘yay’, you know what I mean?”

Annie goes on to say she’d help her kids by making sure they’re informed about what they are “signing up for”. Nick said he understands and asked if she feels like it’s a fad, to which Annie replied “100%”. The two then talked about how they believe people come out due to peer pressure to be gay. Nick said, “When kids start having these thoughts, like, too young, and maybe I’m old-fashioned, but it’s a concern for me because, who’s telling you that?”

As an auntie and 2x godmother, I can tell you that from the time children are infants the adults around them are calling them heartbreakers, asking if they have a girlfriend/boyfriend and enforcing gender roles on them. What Nick is afraid of is actually happening — we do pressure small children into filling roles and having a preference for certain people. It’s just that this pressure is for them to be straight 99% of the time.

Conservative Christians also led the controversy on Love is Blind season 8 when contestant Ben dated Sarah, a woman whose sister is gay. The issue? Ben’s beloved mega-church that he wanted Sarah to attend is famously anti-gay.

At the end of the first chunk of episodes released by Netflix this week, Nick and Annie got engaged. The next episode drop will have them vacationing together in Mexico. We wonder what those episodes will reveal about the couple’s mindset and beliefs.
