The 5 TV Moms From The 90s Who Totally Raised Us

Admit it: You wanted them to be your mom.

By

If you weren’t born in the 80s or 90s, I truly feel sorry for the culture you missed and the nostalgia you are currently missing out on.

However, it does seem current trends lean into what fashion and culture was like in the 90s, but I digress, it’s not the same! In the 90s I had my juice barrels and jelly sandals to keep me company while I ran around the neighborhood like a heathen until the street lights came on. Even then, when I was inside and winding down with my favorite TV shows, I was comforted and supported by all of the teen angst on screen and I felt highly supported by the moms on my favorite TV shows. It was those 90s TV moms that provided the tough love and sweet sentiments that we all needed in our developmental years. 90s TV moms, I salute you for raising a generation of kids. To honor them, let’s take a look at the 5 best TV moms from the 90s that helped raise me and a whole bunch of other kids.

Marge Simpson

Fox

Marge Simpson of The Simpsons always has her hands full when it comes to taking care of her family. Her husband is the goofiest man to exist, her son is always in trouble, her daughter is way too smart and too grown for her age, and her other daughter is still a baby. Marge may be in over her head sometimes, but she loves her family and provides them with the grace they need to be themselves while keeping it all together.

Kitty Forman

Fox

That 70s Show is about a raucous group of teenagers who just want to get a little high, have zero responsibilities and hang out with their friends. Of course, to keep them in line, Kitty Forman is there. She is a biological mom but also a chosen mom by some of the kids in the group and she is always available to speak her mind and deliver it in a direct but sensitive way that those kids need. She’s hilarious and, looking back now, had some very relatable crash outs when thinking about all she had to deal with. Kitty was such a nurturer and did a great job of raising me, I mean, her family.

Clair Huxtable

NBC

Clair Huxtable from The Cosby Show shattered a lot of expectations placed on moms during this era of TV. She was a powerful woman working in a male-dominated field while still taking care of five kids and her husband. She constantly showed up and taught us all that you can be successful and still happy at home. She provided unparalleled guidance and support to her family while still bringing it in the courtroom every day. Clair Huxtable is a national treasure and showed us all that you can lead with love but still lay down the law.

Hilda and Zelda Spellman

ABC

Sabrina The Teenage Witch had a little bit of a unique parental situation as she grew up living with her aunts, Hilda and Zelda Spellman, in place of biological parents. So, while Hilda and Zelda aren’t technically moms, they are the ones who stepped up when it was needed. Hilda and Zelda were opposite of each other and showed Sabrina that she can be responsible but fun, practical but goofy, and magically powerful and strong. Hilda and Zelda were always there as a shoulder to cry on or an ear to listen to, and never shied away from telling it like it is or letting Sabrina figure out what she needed to.

Harriet Winslow

ABC

Family Matters showcased a no-nonsense mom in Harriet Winslow. No matter what, Harriet always put her family first, even if she was mad or didn’t agree with them. Harriet showed that it is possible to be both sides of the coin and that women don’t have to be nurturers or powerful, but they can be both. Harriet always led with fairness and was firm about it, even if it wasn’t what everyone agreed with.
