The 3 Best Sci-Fi Films On Amazon Prime Video This July

For when you have Amazon Prime Video but you have no idea what to watch.

It might typically get overshadowed by its far larger sister genres in horror, comedy, or drama, but science fiction has the potential to transport viewers to entirely new worlds beyond their wildest imaginations.

Whether looking at Star Wars, E.T., Avatar, or Alien, it’s clear that sci-fi continues to stand tall as one of the most inventive genres in the entire entertainment medium, offering up a slew of fantastical settings straight out of our ideal visions for the future. Fortunately, Prime Video has an exciting array of terrific sci-fi movies currently lining its library, from post-apocalyptic monster movies to spine-chilling thrillers set in historical New Mexico.

The Vast of Night (2019)

Amazon Studios

When it first premiered at 2019’s Sundance Film Festival, The Vast of Night instantly became something of an underground sensation. Earning standout attention for its 1950s period setting and budding air of mystery, one can almost describe The Vast of Night as the spiritual successor to Close Encounters of the Third Kind – a riveting, slower-paced, albeit thoughtfully ambiguous portrayal of traditional sci-fi motifs and mysterious alien lifeforms arriving on Earth.

10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)

Paramount Pictures

Yes, okay, 10 Cloverfield Lane tends to receive plenty of attention for its surprising connection to Cloverfield. But it’s also worth pointing out the undeniable high quality of 10 Cloverfield Lane’s opening two acts. Cobbling together a plot consisting of a limited cast and even more limited settings, 10 Cloverfield Lane unfolds as a claustrophobic thriller that keeps you guessing throughout – most especially when it comes to John Goodman’s gruff, enigmatic savior/potential kidnapper, Howard.

A Quiet Place: Day One (2024)

Paramount Pictures

In a genre dominated by lesser and lesser sequels, A Quiet Place remains something of a rarity in the annals of horror. Delivering a trilogy of remarkably enjoyable sci-fi horror movies, each entry in the A Quiet Place franchise is certainly worth watching for one reason or another. Just as the first two installments of the series provided viewers two altogether chilling monster movies, A Quiet Place: Day One once again knocks it out of the park in terms of its atmospheric horror and unnerving apocalyptic settings, offering up a horror film most viewers won’t want to miss.
