Why We Should Stop Praising 'A Star is Born'

This 7-Year-Old Bradley Cooper Movie With 90% On Rotten Tomatoes Is Coming To Netflix

We aren't "shallow" for loving this movie.

There are Lady Gaga stans. There are Oscar stans. There are even country music stans. But one stan that you never hear about is the Bradley Cooper stan. Do those even exist?

Is there someone out there with Maestro memorabilia guarding their shelves and a stack of returned, unanswered love letters next to their life-size statue of Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy? Does this person write three-page Reddit screeds every time Cooper loses another Oscar? Do I … love this person?

Whether or not you exist, Bradley Cooper stan, this one is for you. This one’s also technically for Lady Gaga stans, Oscar stans, and country music stans, but that’s besides the point. I digress. A Star is Born is coming to Netflix on July 8 and there are exactly eight reasons why you should watch it fifteen times.

1. It’s manipulative in the best way

Movies can feel grating when they blatantly toy with your emotions, but A Star is Born manages the task with finesse. Its excellent soundtrack heightens every story beat, allowing Cooper and co-star Lady Gaga to shine in their respective roles. It doesn’t hurt that the story is a classic Hollywood rags-to-riches tale. Ally (Gaga) is a struggling singer-songwriter who has all but given up on her dreams, and Jackson (Cooper) is a down-on-his-luck and alcoholic country star who discovers her and changes her life. Sparks fly. You will cry.

2. Career-best performances

You don’t need to be a Bradley Cooper stan to declare that he deserved an Oscar for this movie! Though the actor has fallen solidly into “always the bridesmaids” territory at the Oscars, he should have gotten his first Best Actor award for this gravelly, tortured performance as Jackson.  Gaga is no slouch either: Her arc from timid cabaret singer to internationally beloved pop star feels authentic and nuanced. It’s almost like she lived it. Wait.

3. Relive a pop moment

More than just being a hit with critics, this movie was a certified Audience hit on Rotten Tomatoes with an 80% score. There was a time when you couldn’t enter a queer bar without hearing a dubstep version of “Shallow.” Remember the almost-kiss between Gaga and Coop at the Oscars? Watching A Star is Born again, you can taste the nostalgia.

4. Speaking of “Shallow”…

“Shallow” was a certified hit before A Star is Born was even released, but that didn’t make the “Shallow” scene in the movie any less affecting. Gaga bares it all in the scene, inviting viewers to see her trepidation before unleashing the full force of her star power. It can still elicit goosebumps.

5. And speaking of the Oscars…

If you’re an Oscars nerd (and if you’re reading Thought Catalog, the chances are high), then you’ll appreciate the lore of A Star is Born. The movie was not only nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Gaga, but also walked away with a Best Original Song award, which of course went to Gaga, inching her closer to EGOT status. (As of 2025, she’s only one “T” away!)

6. Actually, all the songs in this movie are bangers

Maybe “bangers” isn’t the right word, considering that all these songs are either tender ballads about love, tender ballads about depression, or tender ballads about love and depression. Anyway, the songs are beautiful. Did I mention that they’re also tender?

7. Plus, the songs are all live

Like the hardworking queen she is, Gaga assured that everyone involved with her movie could sing their songs live on set. No lip-syncing to pre-recorded tracks occurred during the making of this movie. Thankfully, this shows in the final product: Every song bursts with raw energy and realism.

8. This A Star is Born is the best A Star is Born

A Star is Born has been remade three times since its first iteration in 1937, and will continue to spawn remakes until Earth becomes uninhabitable (so, soon). Look out for the 2080 version set on Mars, starring the nepo grandbabies of Timothée Chalamet and Rachel Zegler. As pop music as we know it will no longer exist, the movie will follow an aspiring dark ambient techno producer.

Until then, however, Cooper and Gaga’s A Star is Born remains the definitive and best version. If you don’t believe us, then just check it out on Netflix on July 8.
