The Best Underrated Netflix Rom Com Is A Glen Powell Masterpiece

By

After recent hits like Top Gun: Maverick, Hit Man, and Twisters, Glen Powell is the current “it” man of Hollywood.

He’s a versatile actor, playing roles set across centuries and genres. One minute Glen Powell is a ruthless hit man and the next he’s seducing nerdy women while in the path of a raging tornado. But if I asked you to think of a romantic comedy starring Glen Powell, your mind will likely head straight to the 2023 hit, Anyone But You. And I wouldn’t blame you! It was a great modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Here’s the problem: You’re forgetting about a great workplace rom com from before he became a huge Hollywood star. Today, we’re talking about the Netflix original movie, Set It Up (2018).

What is Set It Up about?

Harper (Zoey Deutsch) and Charlie (Glen Powell) work in the same office building and have the same role in different companies: The harried, over-worked executive assistants to the big boss. While they may like their jobs, no one likes to work 24/7.

Once they realize they have the same problem–needing some time off work like a normal person–they team up to get their bosses laid. But hooking up their bosses is practically a full-time job itself, which means Harper and Charlie are about to spend a lot of time together. (And you can likely see where this is going.)

What makes it special?

We all know that Netflix Originals are hit-or-miss. Some of their rom coms are amazing, like Happiness for Beginners and Always Be My Maybe. But then they come out with a Tall Girl or Love, Guaranteed and suddenly the streaming service has taken several large steps back.

With Set It Up, this romantic comedy feels more like something that one of the big studios would have filmed and put out around Valentine’s Day, heating up movie theaters everywhere with its friends-to-lovers fire. It could be thanks to Glen and Zoey’s obvious chemistry or the fun plot and great writing from Katie Silberman, who’s also written gems like Booksmart and Isn’t It Romantic. Regardless, Set It Up is a perfect storm of witty banter, undeniable chemistry, and an enviable love story. What more could you want? And you can only watch it on Netflix.
