Chris Catt
This weeks new streaming horror brings us a haunted house movie by the creator of Hell House LLC, a religious horror anthology, another publi-domain-inspired slasher, and a couple of movies that recently wrapped up their theatrical runs.
825 Forest Road
For viewers who enjoy: Stephen Cognetti (the director of Hell House LLC), haunted house movies
After the death of his mother, Chuck moves to a small town with his wife Maria and sister Isabel. What nobody tells them prior to purchasing their new home is that the entire town is haunted by a presence named Helen. The only hope of ending Helen’s torment is by finding her former home, 825 Forest Road, but that could be a deadly task to undertake.
The Monkey
For viewers who enjoy: curse movies, dark comedies, Osgood Perkins
The Monkey is a horror-comedy, but it’s even goofier than the trailers suggest. The story involves a cursed toy monkey that magically kills people, seemingly at random (though maybe not), whenever someone winds the key that causes the monkey to drum. Twin brothers Hal and Bill (both played by Theo James) thought they’d gotten rid of the monkey when they were kids. But now, years later, the killer toy is back, and Hal is forced to deal with it.
Opus
For viewers who enjoy: movies about cults, quirky thrillers, A24
A world-famous yet reclusive pop superstar, Alfred Moretti, is coming out of retirement. To mark this momentous occasion, he invites various media personalities to his private compound, including a young journalist named Ariel. Ariel soon finds herself in the midst of Moretti’s cult-like followers, and she is subjected to his bizarre whims. Fans of satirical movies like The Menu will likely enjoy Opus.
Saint Catherine
For viewers who enjoy: religious horror, anthology films, demonic possession
Saint Catherine is a loose collection of stories all involving cursed objects collected by an unusual home for troubled youth. Ellie is rescued from a kidnapping and is sent to Saint Catherine’s Institute for care, but she learns that her new home is designed to prepare young women for “spiritual warfare.” The training is unorthodox, and it requires the learners to select a cursed object and purge the evil from it. The stories of those objects make up the majority of the film.
Shiver Me Timbers
For viewers who enjoy: Popeye, public domain horror, gory slasher comedies
Set in 1986, a group of friends (including Olive Oyl) go on a camping trip to get a good view of Halley’s comet. A meteor shower is also taking place, and one of the meteors transforms an old sailor into a hulking, killer monster of a man. The jokes and blood fly in equal amounts in Shiver Me Timbers.
