If You Had To Watch One Hulu Movie Tonight, Make It This Forgotten Rom Com

Have a few hours and want to watch something totally unserious?

Have you noticed a film trend sweeping literally every genre, from comedy to horror to action?

There’s a level of seriousness that’s permeating the movie biz. Rather than a silly movie that lightens your mood for an hour and a half, you have to commit to crying or cringing or appreciating the “art” of it all. While serious, artistic movies are great, sometimes you want to watch something totally unserious. That’s why I’m suggesting the 2010 rom com starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel, When In Rome. This is for those nights when you just want to turn off your brain and laugh–and it’s currently streaming on Hulu.

What is When in Rome about?

Beth (Bell), has been pretty unlucky in love, so when she starts to hit it off with Nick (Duhamel) at her sister’s destination wedding in Rome, she thinks her luck might be changing for the better. But after seeing him kiss someone during the reception, she makes a drunken mistake at the faux Trevi Fountain, the Fountain of Love. She plunges her hand into the fountain and steals a fistful of coins, which she brings back to the States with her.

It turns out that taking other people’s wishes has adverse side effects. The owners of those coins are now pursuing her. They insist they’re in love with her, but when she finds out that Nick had also thrown a coin in the fountain too, everything changes.

Why should you watch it tonight?

Listen, life is tough sometimes. Do you want to sit on your couch and watch something that only reminds you of those tough times? Or do you want to watch a romantic comedy that adds a bit of levity? When in Rome isn’t some groundbreaking Oscar movie. It isn’t even the best rom com on Hulu. But it is just the right amount of silly–And we could all use a bit of silliness right now.
