Despite the doomsayers’ repeated claims of the death of physical media, every week there are tons of great Blu-ray releases. New movies, older classics, and obscure gems are released and re-released in the best possible format for collectors and connoisseurs. Collected here are a few of the highlights for horror fans from the Blu-rays released on March 11, 2025.

Trick or Treat (1986)

Trick or Treat is a silly and satirical Halloween movie that plays with the fears of Satanism in heavy metal, which was a huge deal in the media in the 1980s.

Trick or Treat is the perfect rock ‘n’ roll Halloween movie, especially if lived through the 1980s. It’s about a high-school metalhead, Eddie (Marc Price), who is gifted a one-of-a-kind record. He’s given the final recording of his heavy-metal idol, Sammi Curr (Tony Fields), but when he plays it, he unleashes a demonic force that Sammi planned to use to bring himself back from the dead.

Synapse’s release of Trick or Treat is packed with special features including commentary from director Charles Martin Smith, interviews with the makers of the movie, an all-new retrospective on the film, a music video, and more. If you enjoy extremely gory movies about killer clowns and you haven’t seen 100 Tears, now’s the time to check it out. The story follows a pair of tabloid reporters trying to uncover the truth behind the stories of a horrifically violent clown. Between their sequences of amateur detective work, viewers are treated to the blood-splattering antics of Gurdy the Clown.

Unearthed Films released 100 Tears on DVD more than a decade ago, but it’s finally been re-released on Blu-ray. The extra features on this new release appear to be the same as before, so an upgrade might not be necessary if you already own the DVD. But if you’ve never seen 100 Tears and you enjoy gore and clowns, this movie gets a strong recommendation.

Over the past few years, I’ve really gotten into Indonesian horror. The current movies coming out of Indonesia are great fun (even if they’re not all great), and their history of horror is wild. Case in point: The Hungry Snake Woman. The story involves black magic, gore, vampires, chainsaws, and, of course, snake women.

There aren’t many special features to speak of on this release, but just being able to have the movie in a new restoration is fantastic. The disc contains Indonesian and English language options, and the release features new cover art from Justin Coffee.
