One Of The Best Horror Movies Of The Decade Leaves Netflix Next Month
Netflix typically has a limited selection of horror movies, but currently two of the best horror movies of the last 10 years, Hereditary (2018) and Pearl (2022), are part of the service. Genre fans should be aware that Pearl is leaving on February 16.
Pearl is a coming-of-age psychological horror movie about a young woman named Pearl (Mia Goth). Pearl feels trapped on her family farm while she waits for her husband to return from World War I. She is isolated by the influenza epidemic of 1918, by her desire to leave the farm and become a famous dancer and by her abnormal personality.
The movie is part of Ti West’s X trilogy of films: X (2022), Pearl (2022) and MaXXXine (2024). Mia Goth portrayed both Maxine Minx and Pearl in the first film to be released, X. While shooting, Goth and West came up with the idea to make a prequel about the character of Peal and pitched the idea to A24, who gave them funding to stay on location in New Zealand and film an additional movie.
Pearl has been praised for its unique plot and style as well as for Mia Goth’s performance. Specifically, near the end of the film Goth delivers a powerful eight minute monologue that many think was worthy of an Oscar nomination:
Pearl can be viewed on Netflix until February 16. X (2022) and MaXXXine (2024) are both streaming on Max.
