4 Things To Watch While You Wait For The Next Season of ‘Squid Game’
Season 2 of Netflix’s hit show Squid Game was released on December 26th, 2024 as a wonderful last-minute Christmas gift.
If you’re anything like me, you’ve already binged through the whole season and are anxiously awaiting season 3, which is rumored to be released on June 27, 2025. While that’s not that far away, it’s still quite a few months to go without your fix or some seriously problematic classist issues and some hauntingly terrifying children’s games. To help bridge this gap, I’ve found four shows or movies for you to watch that will give the same type of feel. Hopefully, you can find your next binge-watch from the list! Happy gaming!
Squid Game: The Challenge
The most obvious and direct next choice from Squid Game is Squid Game: The Challenge. After how successful Squid Game was for Netflix, the natural next course of action was to make it a reality show. No one dies, but things do get ugly. Following the same format as Squid Game, The Challenge comprises 456 competitors that are battling for $4.56 million in a series of games. If you watched Squid Game and thought, “There’s no way people would stoop this low for money”, Squid Game: The Challenge proves that people, indeed, would.
Physical: 100
Physical: 100 is another reality TV show where all the contestants are pitted against each other. 100 contestants battle it out in various challenges that require gymnastics, strongman, and MMA-like skills until there is only one player left. You can think of Physical: 100 as similar to Bloodsport, if you’re into 1980s martial arts movies.
Alice In Borderland
Alice In Borderland is about a group of gamers who find themselves in a parallel universe in Tokyo. The group of friends must solve problems together in order to survive, which is unlike Squid Game since the ultimate prize is being the last player standing and killing the competition. However, Alice In Borderland still has a lot of violence and the problems to be solved keep being thrown at the gamers, so you’ll be experiencing the same edge-of-your-seat feeling as you did in Squid Game.
Battle Royale (2000)
Battle Royale is a Japanese movie from 2000 that really tackles the concept of killing each other for survival and self-preservation. Battle Royale follows a totalitarian government that forces high school students to be sent to a deserted island because they’re highly delinquent. Once there, the students are instructed to kill one another until there is only one left standing. That may seem extreme, but that’s essentially what Squid Game is. Battle Royale is a little older, but it proves that classism and social hierarchy never go out of style for thriller movies and shows.
