A Very Disturbing Psychological Thriller Is Now On Shudder
It appeared as a dark horse on many "best movies of the year" lists and has a pretty high rating (3.9) on Letterboxd.
Red Rooms (2023) is a Canadian psychological thriller about a model and technophile, Kelly-Anne (Juliette Gariépy), who is consumed with a high profile true crime case. Kelly-Anne is so obsessed with the case that she literally sleeps on the street in order to be one of a few civilians who is allowed into the courtroom to witness the trial of Ludovic Chevalier (Maxwell McCabe-Lokos). Chevalier is accused of murdering three teenage girls and broadcasting the crime in a “red room” — a dark web snuff film.
Red Rooms premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival where it won Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Performance and Best Score. Despite being a French language film it has gained popularity through word of mouth in the US. It appeared as a dark horse on many people’s “best movies of the year” lists and has a pretty high rating (3.9) on Letterboxd. When I watched Red Rooms, I thought it was a decent slow burn crime thriller until the final scene, which is so shocking and unhinged I ended up really loving the movie.
Red Rooms is currently streaming on Shudder.
