Official day 5 companion: My two dogs because my wife laughs when I get emotional over cutesy movies like this.
Let It Snow is about a group of high schoolers who are forced to come together as a snowstorm barrels toward their small town. The thing about Let It Snow is that the characters are a little more relatable than your standard white-washed Hallmark Holiday movie.
Julie (Isabela Merced) is a girl who is struggling with their decision to go to college. Dorrie (Liv Hewson) is having a secret romance with another girl, Kerry (Anna Akana), who is a closeted cheerleader at their school. There’s a standard love triangle, a wise but insane older woman, and a pop star who gets stranded in town during the storm. Okay, so maybe not all of it is relatable considering there’s a huge pop star who gets humbled by the storm and a feisty non-fan who brings him back down to earth when he needs it, but the movie features queer relationships and many people of color to create a more diverse story.
The overall story may be somewhat predictable and nothing to write home about, but the performances from the cast and the way that the story infuses more than just good-time Christmas cheer makes it special. As an adult, we can all relate to feeling lost and unsure in high school. The nostalgia of not knowing what your life will be and the pressure of making the right decision will have you nodding your head and smiling as the characters work their way through those tough thoughts. There are many moments in Let it Snow that will inspire you to have more confidence in yourself and sometimes, just trust what life has to offer for you.
If you’re into reading and like the movie, you can also check out the book. It’s called Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances and is by John Green, Lauren Myracle, and Maureen Johnson. The book was written over 10 years ago, so the movie provides a more modern take on lifestyles and romances, which is something I always prefer.
