If They Ever Ask You Why She Changed

Tell them she gave me her heart
and I threw it away.
Tell them she waited for me,
time and time again
but I never showed up.

Tell them she all she wanted to do
was love me
and all I did was let her go.
Tell them she declared her love
to the whole world
but I never told a soul.

Tell them she wanted to ease my loneliness,
she wanted to make the night less terrifying
and all I did was leave her alone at night,
in her bed crying.

Tell them she gave me more than one chance
but I ruined them all.
Tell them she listened to all my stories
but I never asked her about one of her chapters.

Tell them she changed because I made her,
because every time she’d get closer
I’d find ways to push her away
and every time she tried to love me,
I made her love herself a little less.

Tell them she changed because
she was the only one caring,
she was the only one loving
and she was only one hurting.

Tell them she changed because she finally realized
that I’ll never give her what she wants
and she finally realized that she deserves someone
who gives her everything she wants and more.  Thought Catalog Logo Mark
