Depression is one of those things that is almost impossible to explain to someone who hasn’t experienced it themselves. Depression is frustrating. It makes you feel like giving up. Here are five little reminders to help you get through those tough times.
1. Depression is temporary.
Though it may feel like it’s going to last forever, it’s not. It’s okay to feel down and hopeless at times. Journal, write out how you’re feeling. Just remember that there are better days ahead
2. There are other people who are experiencing the same thing as you.
You may feel alone and lost, but chances are there is someone else out there feeling the exact same way. Know you’re not alone in this messy spiral we call depression.
3. Have a toolbox that you can lean on when you’re feeling depressed.
Whether it be a friend who motivates you to get out of bed or simply a friend who will sit and do absolutely nothing with you. You may want to push people away, but knowing you have someone in your corner is comforting.
4. Don’t drink alcohol if you’re feeling down.
It may take away the feeling temporarily, but as soon as you wind down from that all of the feelings will resurface. Your problems aren’t going to simply disappear, they will come back and you will feel all of the feelings just as hard.
5. Have a list of affirmations that you can look at when you’re feeling down.
It can be as simple as “You will get through this because you’re strong”. It’s hard to remind yourself of these things when your down, so having it prepared beforehand is essential.
Depression is hard. It comes at the worst times and can often get in the way of many things. It’s hard when there is still such a stigma associated with mental illness. Just know, you are not alone and there are people who will support you.
