4 Everyday Activities That Are Actually More Spiritual Than You Might Think

What makes someone a spiritual person?

What qualities do they need to have? What should they look like or act like? Everyone has a different view of someone who embodies a spiritual essence.

Maybe it’s your local pastor or priest, your yoga instructor or the woo woo lady who lives down the street and does dances under the full moon.

But what if I told you that the fitness junkie at the gym is also highly spiritual? Or the restaurant owner at your local pub? It could be that guy who gave you your first tattoo or your family dentist.

The truth is, everyone connects with their spirituality in different ways.

There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to spiritual practices.

If you’re unsure of the difference between spirituality and religion (don’t worry, I’ve been there!), let’s just take a second to clarify:

Religion is the belief in and worship of a superhuman force or power, especially a god or gods.

Spirituality is relating to or affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.

You don’t have to be religious to be spiritual. It’s not a prerequisite. The connection you have with your soul can be made through endless possibilities and doesn’t require a religion to do so.

Okay, so we’ve covered that spirituality can be practiced by anyone, but what if I told you that you could be engaging in spiritual practices and not even know it?

Everyone connects to their soul. It is part of who you are as a whole human, but not everyone can recognize that connection or does the work to strengthen it.

I am going to outline some lesser known spiritual practices and explain why you could be spiritual and not even know it.

1. Working Out.

When you’re exercising, your level of self-awareness is heightened. Take running, for example. You need to be aware of your breathing so you don’t get a stitch; when you’re doing yoga, you need to be aware of which way your body is bending in a certain pose. When you’re really in tune with your body and listening to it during exercise, you have a better workout, but what you are also achieving is a connection with your body. You concentrate on your breathing. You are focused. You become aware of yourself in the present moment. I guess you could say that fitness is a form of mediation.

2. Decluttering.

Do you ever feel the need to just empty a closet and organize it? You take everything out, get rid of what you don’t want, put back what you do want. Doing this “chore” is the same as clearing negative energy from your life. You can achieve the same feeling when you use a smudge stick to cleanse your house of bad energy. Each action, though different, has the same cleansing effect on your soul. When you do either of those actions, you are cleaning the mess or clearing the space in order to create new and positive things to come in.

3. Taking a shower.

Have you ever taken a shower after a particularly rough day to wash away all the dirt, grime, and stress of the day? You aren’t just cleaning your body, you’re cleaning out that negative energy from your soul as well. Water has extremely high purification and cleansing properties (for obvious reasons). So, next time you’re in the shower, visualize washing away your problems along with the dirt.

4. Helping people.

Highly spiritual people want to help. They want to take what they know and share it with others. They want to share their gifts with the world in any way they can. When you get a feeling like you want to help someone, you are embracing oneness. You don’t see yourself as separate from others, but instead you genuinely want to lift others up and support them. This embracing of oneness is a sign of that spiritual essence.

What someone else might consider to be a spiritual practice might not be how you make that connection, and that’s okay. This is different for everyone.

Spirituality is not a pigeonholed practice.

You don’t have to go to church or use crystals to be spiritual. In fact, you really don’t have to change a whole lot in your life to tap into what spirituality means for you.

It can be something simple that you do every day that brings you peace and joy. Dubbing a certain activity or way of living as YOUR personal spiritual practice can have a huge transformational impact on your life.
