Trusting Your Intuition Is The Key To Inspired Living

“Cease trying to work everything out with your minds. It will get you nowhere. Live by intuition and inspiration and let your whole life be Revelation.” — Eileen Caddy

Have you ever felt you are meant to do something on a particular occasion?

Do you ever get the impulse to call a friend just to find out they are in need of support at that time?

If you sensed an inner voice whispering or prompting you, that is your intuition, or the voice of your spirit. It is not a physical entity but a timeless, spiritual force grounded in love and wisdom.

Characteristics Of Intuition

Intuition is gentle and subtle.

Intuition whispers. It does not scream or plead with you. As you go about your day, your intuition speaks in subtle hints. To perceive it, you must keep a peaceful demeanour and thoughtfully listen to the voice of your spirit.

Intuition is spontaneous.

You can access intuition any time and often unexpectedly. You could be in the middle of a conversation with a co-worker and your intuition advises you they are burdened with a major problem and need to talk about it. This may prompt you to ask what is bothering them and open the door for compassionate communication.

“Accessing your intuitive guidance really does require you to enter the “wilderness” of that quiet place within you where no one else can follow. Your intuition is the very still voice arising from the authentic self,” affirms spiritual author Dennis Merritt Jones in, Your Redefining Moments: Becoming Who You Were Born to Be.

Intuition Is A Real Force.

It is not just a thought. Intuition is a real spiritual energy that guides and directs you. You can become in tune to your spirit if you take the time to recognise it.

With intuition there is no striving or feelings of urgency. If you are pressed, rushed or anxious, it is not at the fault of intuition but rather over active thoughts.

It was the late Apple founder Steve Jobs who said,

“If you just sit and observe, you will see how restless your mind is. If you try to calm it, it only makes it worse, but over time it does calm, and when it does, there’s room to hear more subtle things — that’s when your intuition starts to blossom and you start to see things more clearly and be in the present more. Your mind just slows, and you see a tremendous expanse in the moment. You see so much more than you could see before. It’s a discipline; you have to practice it.”

Intuition Is Associated More With Right Brain.

The left side of the brain is associated with thoughts while the right brain is connected with imagination. Your intuition plays its role through the right brain, impressing images in the mind’s eye.

Meditation and visualisation help you tune in to your intuition and access the right side of the brain. Find time daily to meditate or sit in silence and visualise. Allow your intuition to show you impressions and listen as it speaks.

“Intuition will tell the thinking mind where to look next.”
— Jonas Salk

Intuition Always Works

Whether you appreciate the outcomes of your intuition, it is always working for you. Similar to a language, the more you learn to understand its finer points the more you use it. You never know how intuition can guide you to safety or keep you from harm because its power lies in its subtlety.

For example, one day you decide to travel home via an alternative route instead of taking the freeway, which you normally do. Later that evening, you hear on the news of a massive accident that took place at the same time you were driving home. Intuition acts in the slightest possible way and does not appeal to logic, though if you trust it often, it can work wonders.

Author Jamie Smart states in Clarity: Clear Mind, Better Performance, Bigger Results, “When a person is acting from clarity, they’ll still have powerful intuitions about the importance of timing, but there’s rarely a feeling of stressful urgency. That’s one of the reasons inspired action can be so effective and impactful.”

Intuition Is Always Available

You are but a spiritual being having a physical experience and intuition is always available to you. It is easy to forget the spiritual aspects of life and get caught up in the physical world. Go to work, come home, cook dinner, do the chores, etc. — it can become busy.

Busyness diminishes the ability to perceive intuition. It is why you should take time each day to do nothing. Even 15 minutes is enough to retreat to a quiet place with no phone, no computer, no television, and no people. This time is devoted to your spiritual well-being.

Use it to sit still and reconnect with yourself and notice the sound of nothingness. Move your attention away from your thoughts and to your chest region. Take a few deep breaths and relax. Let the worries and concerns melt away, since there is nowhere to go and nothing to do, other than to come home to yourself.

Listen.

Listen to your core self.

Your authentic self — your spirit, wants to reconnect with you. It never leaves your side, yet it is drowned out by the incessant thoughts dominated by the rational mind.

Note your thoughts during this time and be with them no matter how intense. Don’t judge them; just sit with them as you would a friend in need of attention.

Notice your dreams and anything in particular. It may be: a feeling, an impulse or a key symbol. Do the images or symbols reappear throughout subsequent dreams? What messages do they contain about your waking life? If you’re unsure, look up their possible meaning.

Make the time you spend alone sacred.

“When our minds are set on one thing or on one way of doing things, mindlessly determined in the past, we blot out intuition and miss much of the present world around us,” states author Ellen J. Langer in her book, Mindfulness.

Through this simple practice, you will see life in a different way. You may find yourself more relaxed and happy. You may experience your emotional wellbeing is enriched; the possibilities are endless if you take the time to honour the wisdom within.

Intuition is ready to be a part of your life through inspired living. It will allow you to take the right road instead of the wrong one, to work for an honest employer instead of a dishonest one. It will encourage you to grow; spiritually, mentally, and physically because you are invested in the person who matters most – you.

You may be led to a book that will revolutionise your business, a person who offers to mentor you, or a job opportunity you’ve dreamed of. Your intuition wants you to have a rewarding life but you must collaborate and speak its language first.

Let today be the day you commit to taking more time to listen to your intuition.

Allow it to influence your life in every way and rest assured, it will be the gentle companion you come to call on.
