Why Being In A Relationship In Your 20s Is The Worst Idea Ever

After my most recent breakup, I have come to the conclusion that other than great sex and free meals, there is zero point in being in a relationship in your twenties. The good ‘ole “we met in college and have been together ever since” doesn’t f*cking exist anymore. Or it does, if you plan on graduating from college, moving in with your boyfriend, having a nine to five desk job, and getting married a couple years down the line. But lets be real, that sounds horrible. When you’re 21 and graduating from college, as cliche as it sounds, you have your whole life in front of you. It’s the one point in your life where you are truly free to go anywhere and do anything, with (or without) anyone. You could move to Australia and work on a banana farm if you felt so inclined.

But then one day you meet f*cking prince charming. He’s perfect; he’s intelligent, funny, older, likes to travel, is good at handy-man type household activities, and you can already envision him holding your prince charming babies. Suddenly all of your previous dreams of working on a banana farm in Australia go out the door, because, well, look at him. You fall madly in love with each other, and are pretty sure he shits gold because he’s that amazing. Then one day you’re looking at plane flights to Thailand and realize that you’re 21 years young. The practicality of being in a serious relationship when there is still a whole list of places to go and goals to accomplish sets in. You now have to think about where your going to be and what your going to be doing in terms of where your significant other is going to be, and what they are going to be doing.

You break up, wishing that you met Prince Charming three years from now, when you have already worked on multiple banana farms and traveled southeast asia, because he’s too perfect to look at and see regret. Regret of not fulfilling your some-what insane goals, of not being free while you’re still able to be.

So my advice to you, is to not fall in love with prince charming in the first place. At least, not yet. Go be in your twenties; be independent and travel, or do something that you’ve always dreamed of doing and can now actually do. Whatever it may be, take a couple years of you time, because you owe it to yourself, damn it. If he is really your prince charming, your paths will cross again in the future, and when they do, you will have crazy stories about your twenties to tell your prince-charming babies about. TC mark
