We say we want to help, we try, and we even witness the positive short-term changes. The smiles, the hope, and the fix. We can’t see our long-term and unintended effects, both positive and negative. This is what keeps me awake at night.
All kinds of organizations, especially in developing countries, will welcome travelers with excess time, enthusiasm and skills to give. For travelers, it can be a unique opportunity to work in a different country for a short period of time (no visas required) and to get to know a community outside major cities and tourist havens.
I’ve worked with a lot of students who didn’t do any internships or work any jobs while in college and then get into the working world and due to the competitive nature of entry level jobs they don’t have enough experience for entry level jobs, which are usually looking for 1-3 years of internship experience (although the mileage may vary depending on the specialized nature of the job so I’ll speak generally.)
