Couple sits down at my table. Do the usual greeting. Ask them if they would like to start out with a beverage. The female replies, “coke, please”. The male stops her, interrupting “uh, make that a diet coke. I’ll take a jack and coke”. The date didn’t get any better.
There is a lot of controversy that surrounds the restaurant industry- what workers deserve, the ethics of tipping or the true nature of the work. However, in all of my experiences since I joined the workforce, I feel that my time working in restaurants prepared me for the future better than any other job could have.
Unless you have served, you don’t understand how ignorant you’re actually being when you go out to eat (or drink.) If you are in the industry, you know exactly what I’m talking about. And if you’re not, well, there’s a high likeliness that at some point in your life, your server wanted to curse you off, but couldn’t.
