You are worth far more than a label that limits you. And who you are as a person is not defined by whether or not you’re loved, or loving someone.
Being a son or daughter of Christ is your identity.
Take pride in your “year-round tan”as I like to say, and don’t wear your skin like a drunken apology.
The other day at a party, a white girl drunkenly called me “Nora” for several minutes before she realized that Nora, the only other Asian person present, was actually on the other side of the room.
I stay up at night, because my heart is beating too fast. My lungs are sucking in air too fast. My thoughts are racing too fast, making me terrified of what the future will bring.
The night gives me too much time to spend inside my head — which is not a pleasant place to be.
Growing up, I always got these questions – “What are you? Where are you from?” I proudly would respond, “San Francisco! I’m from California.” They would narrow their eyes at me and say, “No, but where are you FROM?”
When they need me, I drop whatever it is I’m doing to try and help them, encourage them, and convince them that pain is temporary, that they’re strong, and that they’re not a burden.
I don’t like to go anywhere on my own. If I’m invited to a party, I want to drive there with a friend, so I don’t have to walk through the door alone. I want someone that I can follow around like a puppy dog, someone that will make me feel a little more comfortable.
