So much about being a Black woman in America is denial. Denial of your womanhood because being Black is considered more important than being a woman. Denial of your sexuality because being chaste and pure is considered more important being sexually free.
Hollywood still hasn’t had a “come to Jesus” moment on the harshness of black life in America.
For decades, her contributions to American history remained a well-kept secret. President Obama changed this when he awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
But its political stance is clear: pro-black and pro-woman; pro-black womanhood, as asserted by Beyoncé, the artist and the person.
As far as I was concerned, she might as well have told me she hoped baby North didn’t look black, because blackness was ugly.
