Today, I am aware that I am black. No longer can I hide inside the race protectant bubble I unfortunately built for myself growing up. Today I am aware that, like many others who don’t fit the Trump “formula”, I am being watched more. Today I am fully aware of the horrifying racism and discriminatory hate trying to divide our country.
What I want you to know Mr. Trump, is that instead of building a wall (as you so vocally want to do if elected), and starting a life with someone that bared the same skin tone, beliefs, background, and past, my father created a bridge made out of love and respect.
Out of breath and way heavier, I celebrate my one-year anniversary with my husband. As 20-somethings, I am sure there are many things we clumsily discovered about love, romance, and creating an economic safety net for our future selves. However, nothing seems as important, at least in this last year, as the realizations of the not-so-sexy parts of being in a biracial couple.
