As the Rebecca Black saga continues to run its course, critical mass looms. Like any respectable meme, parodies and remixes have helped push “Friday” (74 million views!) into the Annals of Internet Infamy. But for the most part, such tributes have been forgettable. This remix by Cynical Mass, however, aptly transforms Black’s $4000 vanity track into a masterful audio-visual creepout.
Herein begins one of the most controversial sections of the song: The rap. Featuring an African American man in his mid 30s, audiences expect this lyrical maestro to hop on the flow and “break it down.” He evokes the muses by calling for “R-B,” but what follows can only be described as gibberish.
In more civilized times, music industry bottom feeders had to seek out the child prodigies and pre-teen crooners they sought to exploit. That meant trolling shopping malls and amusement parks in the armpits of America and the Great White North, all in hopes that The Search would turn up the next Bop or Tiger Beat centerfold.
Thanks to Rebecca and her production team, we’ve turned a corner and there is no going back. It took me two full viewings before I figured out that this wasn’t a joke. (Parts that stumped me: when the rapper suddenly appears, when she says “gotta have my bowl”).
