21 Things No One Tells You About Long Distance Dating

By

I’ve been wanting to say all of this for quite awhile now. A simple warning: this is not going to be an all-happy-you-can-do-it-fairy-tale-like post (whether or not you are advocators or anti-long distance relationships).

Let’s face it—the truth is: It’s hard.

1. It feels a lot like you are spending countless hours, Friday nights, and weekends doing your own things—staring at your computer, watching TV mindlessly and running more than you should.

2. It feels a lot like being single all over again—except that you experience all the downsides of being locked down and few of the upsides.

3. Friends will ask you the same questions over and over again: “Are you still together?” or “Is he back?”

4. Half your friends will tell you “it’s worth it” while the remaining half tell you “You’re too young to wait.” A few will add, “I don’t know how you do it.”

5. It feels a lot like he is not listening—“Are you there?” *crickets*

6. It feels a lot like you need to send out a specific text at a specific time, just to receive the right response.

7. When you don’t post online about each other for a few months, friends will inevitably ask, “Is everything okay???”

8. You will have so much space, you don’t exactly know what to do with it.

9. You will feel very much alone. No one really understands what you’re going through.

10. Mushy posts of couples online will make you cringe. So much so that you would consider deleting the Instagram app from your phone entirely.

11. It feels like you have a lot of forgotten arguments. The time difference make it seem like there’s no time to resolve anything.

12.You get cranky and frustrated easily, and you don’t have your bae to lean on for support in the moments when you need them.

13.You start to feel sorry for yourself.

14. Some say you won’t ever get used to it. It’s kinda true, you sense, but you figure you’ll get better at it with time.

15. Five minutes on the phone is sometimes enough to make you feel better. Sometimes.

16. You’ll spend your birthdays and holiday without him, and you won’t have your partner around to celebrate work or school related accomplishments.

17. Cards and photos mean the world to you, and yet they seem insufficient simultaneously.

18. You don’t get to expect a quick response to your texts, necessarily. When it’s nighttime for him, it could be daytime for you.

19. Falling asleep holding the phone to your ear feel nice, but it isn’t anything like falling asleep right next to each other.

20. Every airport good-bye is painful, like you’re stepping into unchartered waters each time, making you question your decision to stay together.

21. Viber and Skype are your best friends. But they will fail you. You’ll be sharing something lovely about your day—and the line will cut off.
