I Don’t Need You, But I Choose You

By

Oh baby, you, you got what I need…

But actually, no. You don’t.

I don’t need you.

I don’t need to be held. I don’t need to be told I’m beautiful. I don’t need someone to pay for my meals and treat me to nice dates. I don’t need you to get me gifts every holiday or surprise me on my birthday. I don’t need to know I’m wanted.

I’m sorry if this disappoints you, but I don’t need you.

However, I do want you. And that is more beautiful than need.

I want you to be mine. I want to be the one who gets to hold your hand and kiss your lips. I want to be the one you lay around in sweatpants with on lazy Sundays. I want to be the one you share your secrets with. I want you to call me yours.

I want you to want me, but, unlike Cheap Trick, I don’t need you to need me.

I don’t need someone to control my happiness. My emotions are in my possession, and I take sole responsibility for them. I refuse to surrender my personal power to someone else. I can’t afford to lose myself in another.

I don’t need you to fulfill me. I am a complete and independent person on my own.

You don’t need to complete me. Simply complement me. I don’t need another half to make me whole. I want a union of two wholes.

You don’t get to choose what you need.

Yet, I get to choose you.

And I love my choice.
