The 5 Artists to Brighten Your Saturday Evening

I find Saturdays to be quite stale without the proper music to become your weekend soundtrack. I have outlined ten songs that will drastically improve your Saturday afternoon and evening. These songs will be perfect for sitting outside in the warm afternoon with a couple of ice cold Stella Artois beers.

1. Mishka Shubaly

Mishka Shubaly is a resident of Brooklyn, NY and has dark, sing-a-long type tracks that you might find comforting. He is also the author of several books that are currently available for purchase through Amazon Kindle. If you are a patron of the Doug Stanhope podcast, you will recognize that Mishka’s songs are often the introductory song to the podcast. He released the album Coward’s Path in February of this year.

2. Shakey Graves

Shakey Graves is from Austin, TX. His music style borrows from classic country, blues, and indie rock music. He started as an artist who recorded music in his own home. He has a couple harmonies with Esme Patterson on his newest album, And The War Came.

3. Gary Clark Jr.

Gary is an artist based out of Austin, TX as well. His style is an amalgamation of soul, jazz, hip hop, blues, and rock. His song, Bright Lights, was featured in the Rockstar Games classic Max Payne 3. He was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in 2013 for Ain’t Messin Around.

4. Hayes Carll

Hayes Carll is based out of The Woodlands, TX. He was named #1 on’s Top 50 Song of 2011 for the track Another Like You. He has a great remake of Ray Wylie Hubbard’s Drunk Poet’s Dream. His music transcends today’s Bro Country and pays homage to the classic Outlaw Country scene.

5. Sturgill Simpson

Sturgill Simpson is a country singer from Nashville, Tennessee. He is one of the more prominent singer-songwriters in Country music today. Like Hayes Carll, Sturgill has more honest and insightful lyrics than his fellow contemporary country artists. Simpson’s new album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, has been touted by Joe Rogan and Shooter Jennings as a modern classic.

I hope that these contemporary classics will provide you the soundtrack to a great weekend. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
