Moving Back Home After Graduation Does Not Mean You Failed

Have no fear of perfection – you’ll never reach it.” ― Salvador Dalí

You’ve probably come to realize that “success” is one of those words that are easy to mix up because everyone defines it so differently. So naturally, failure can have the same effect. When you graduate from your away school and have been living away from home, building a new identity for yourself, and begin finding your way in adulthood, a lot can go right and just as much can and will go wrong at least once. For some, the idea of moving back home is not an option, but for others, it feels like the only option. If you did not feel you don’t really have a choice in the matter, let me help you get some perspective on how this can be one of the best times of your life. Let’s face it, nothing lasts forever and you’ll miss some things about home when you leave for real this time.

More people are living home after graduation nowadays

If you care about trends, find solace in this one. You are not alone! Chances are a lot of your friends are moving back home (the length of time varies), but they understand. So take a deep breath. You did not fail, and you are not a failure. Now you can work to make this a seasonal thing and not a permanent thing. Let being home become the opportunity that it can be, in your mind.

You need to do what is is best for you, not just what look best on you

Some people have forced themselves out on their own before they were ready, blew their money and ended up home anyway. Some people have gone back home to save money, never set a budget, and blew it all anyway. If you want to move on, know now that it never happens by accident. Take notice of your habits, decide what needs to change and work on that.

Bond with your family, really take time to appreciate them

Don’t be so caught up in progressing and moving your world that you forget about the people who are keeping you in orbit. Gift your parents, hang out with your siblings, spend time, do chores, contribute to the family, your family. Parents won’t always be here so love on them while they are because it is never long enough. Siblings are like friends, they are not guaranteed relationships, they are cultivated relationships. Get to know your siblings again and again. Be a part of their real lives. It’s a bit easier when you move back because you are in the same place and that always helps.

Baby steps forward are still steps taken forward

You are not in a race! You don’t have to run. You don’t have to try to impress anyone. Just be true to you, be present for people who show up for you, be kind to people who can’t and keep moving forward. Some days you will sprint comfortably and other days you may just roll over, but hey! Moving forward is all that matters, amirite?

Be Resourceful

You learn to be resourceful when you notice your how limited resources are. You learn to do more with less and to have fun anyway. Life becomes fuller, your wallet gets less stressed, and you learn to be content with your life and yourself. This is not the end, but it is a part of your story and all-in-all, it’s not that bad.
