Life Is Not Unfair If You Focus On What You Already Have

I know, I know. The title of this article already sounds crazy to you. I’m not saying you should stay in a perfect state of contentment. I am saying that the truth is, if you have the basics to live right now, food, water, a home, a job, you need to focus on the things you already have and make the very most of your life. I used to spend a lot of time feeling discontent because even though I had more than most people, I didn’t spend enough time being grateful for it or appreciating my life what it already was. Instead of focussing on the good things that had happened in my day, I chose to focus on the bad. That word is important. Chose to focus on the bad.

I struggle with depression and anxiety on the regular. And when I say struggle I mean there are plenty of days I do not want to get out of bed in the morning because what is the point. I don’t want to even step out of my house for fear of being judged for something no one else would probably even notice but me. You know what has helped me reduce those days to a handful from almost everyday? It’s trying really hard to focus on the good things. And there are always good things to focus on. Cute cats and dogs, a hug from someone who loves you, a pretty day, the rain, a tv show you have been waiting on releasing, a book that just pulls you in and holds you in a world other than your own. These may seem like small frivolous things but they make all the difference in the whole world to someone who struggles through mental illness every single day.

Gratitude is the key to a happy life. It really is. If you focus on what you have rather than on what you do not, you will find yourself feeling a little bit better every single day. Happiness is a state of existence, it is not a destination. You need to train your own mind to see the benefits of living a life which is truly happy through actual gratitude.

What you have right now is not going to get better if you avoid bettering it by hunting for a secret door out of your life into a magically better one.

You have been given everything you need to live a full and happy life. The universe ensured that by ensuring your existence. Your mistakes are all learning opportunities. Your losses are all making room for something beautiful and new in your life. Your failures are all teaching you how to grow and evolve into a better person. And if you learn to change your perspective on your life, if you accept your life as it is without hunting for a secret door to escape to a happier one, I promise you happiness will not elude you for wrong.
