6. Drinking Buddies

Prolific indie director Joe Swanberg (Hannah Takes the Stairs, Nights and Weekends) has been steadily improving as an artist, and Drinking Buddies is his most mature work to date. On top of being a fine example of the mumblecore movement, it’s great cast (Olivia Wilde, Anna Kendrick) is reminiscent of the great dramas of the 1970s, like Carnal Knowledge and Bob Carol Ted and Alice. It’s a genuine triumph from a director who, like his characters, is starting to find himself.
