Tom Hanks has been in a slump the past couple years – with misfires like Cloud Atlas and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close under his belt – and this is a grand return to form for the beloved actor. It helps that his director, Paul Greengrass, works miracles. Greengrass brought us United 93, The Bourne Ultamatum and Bloody Sunday, and this is yet another triumph from the foremost auteur in modern action. Captain Phillips is tense and gripping, all the more compelling because its terror is grounded in real events.
