#JusticeForTrayvon: 40 Tributes To Trayvon Martin On Twitter

After Saturday’s verdict on the Trayvon Martin case, acqutting George Zimmerman of all charges, a riot erupted over social media, as followers of the case sounded off on their disbelief. George Zimmerman somehow got off using the “Stand Your Ground” law, but Florida woman whose husband was abusing her got 20 years for firing a warning shot at him, in order to protect herself and her children. The jury ruled that she wasn’t standing her ground or acting in self-defense, but a man targeting an unarmed boy was.

This is America today, and anyone who believes that a half-black president means we’re post-race should look no further than this case. We have a lot of work left to do.

From Cornel West to Miley Cyrus, users tweeted messages of frustration, anger and hope. If we want to make America a better place for young black men everywhere, the future Trayvon Martins of the world, we can start by speaking out against inequality. As Martin Luther King once wrote, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” and you can  start speaking out by signing this petition to demand that George Zimmerman be brought to trial on a civil rights case.
