Let’s Celebrate Equality: The Supreme Court Rules DOMA And Prop 8 Unconstitutional!

It’s not even noon yet, and this is already a pretty great day to be alive. In addition to Texas ruling that Wendy Davis won her filibuster yesterday, protecting Texas women from a horribly restrictive reproductive rights measure, the Supreme Court ruled this morning on that both DOMA and Prop 8 were unconstitutional. Anyone who has been following SCOTUS in the past months expected DOMA to be struck down (because it’s blatantly unconstitutional and a violation of states’ rights), but striking down Prop 8 was a huge victory for marriage rights activists. It’s going to make the fight for marriage that much smoother, as Illinois jockeys to become the 13th state to legalize marriage equality for all.

In addition to Portia and Ellen getting their marriage back, the Supreme Court said that all humans are equal — on the 10th anniversary of Lawrence vs. Texas being struck down. That’s pretty cool.

I have to say, today is a pretty great day to be an American, between Wendy Davis and the DOMA ruling. For every moment we get cynical about our ability to do good in the world, days like these are a sign that people can affect change. These aren’t victories for women or queers, but for humans. This is the democracy we were promised.

If you want to get your RIP DOMA dance party started, I suggest you check out this 90’s dance remix of “Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead!” You can’t have equality without dancing. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
