1. Human Sacrifice at CERN

A video uploaded to YouTube in August captured what appeared to be a ritual human sacrifice taking place in the courtyard of the European Organization of Nuclear Research, or CERN. In the video, a number of dark-robed figures congregate before a statue of the Hindu god Shiva. One of the figures disrobes, revealing herself naked, and willingly lies on the ground before the statue when another one of the robed figures, brandishing a knife, approaches the lying woman and brings the knife down on her and the video abruptly cuts off.

When the video went viral, a spokesperson for CERN assured the public that the event was merely an elaborate prank, a “work of fiction.” This would seem to put the controversy quickly to rest, if it weren’t for the fact that the man who recorded the act was soon after found dead.

2. Man’s Last Hookup

In early October, a self-proclaimed Satanist and crystal meth addict, Stefano Brizzi, 50, was charged for the murder of 56-year-old Metropolitan Police Officer Gordon Semple.

The two met through the gay dating app Grindr, and subsequently arranged for a hookup session at Brizzi’s place. Soon after Semple arrived, Brizzi strangled him to death and dismembered his corpse. He then attempted to dissolve Semple’s body parts in his acid-filled bathtub. It wasn’t until neighbors began complaining about a foul smell coming from Brizzi’s apartment that the crime was finally brought to the attention of law enforcement. Brizzi would later tell interrogators, “I met him on Grindr and I killed him. Satan told me to.”

3. Terrible Mother

Tiffany Alberts, 41, was charged in November with six counts of aggravated battery and one count of neglect of a dependent. Her 15-year-old son had been hospitalized and undergoing treatment for cancer when it was discovered, through video surveillance, that Alberts was repeatedly injecting fecal matter into his IV bag.

When asked why she did it, Alberts replied that it was in an effort to get her son moved from the ICU to another care unit where she believed “the treatment was better.” Whether or not her motivation is true, the doctor caring for her son was reported as saying that the boy “could have died from any of the episodes of septic shock and may well from his leukemia due to the prolonged delay in therapy.”

4. Black Magic Prayer

When a 14-year-old girl in Assam, India, lost her cell phone, her parents went to an unbelievable length to find it for her. Her parents consulted with a local “black witch priest” to help them get it back.

As part of the black magic prayer, the witch priest requires a human child sacrifice to ensure the prayer’s success. The witch priest and his assistants then kidnapped a 4-year-old girl, tortured and dismembered her. The little girl’s body was found in a forest roughly 90 yards from her home, decapitated and with arms severed.

5. Mother in the Freezer

In North Carolina, a 56-year-old woman, Marcella Jean Lee, sold a freezer containing her mother’s corpse to a neighbor during a yard sale. For $30. The autopsy reported the mother died of “unknown” causes.

6. Waffle House Homicide

In early March, Florida resident Timothy Johnson, 25, seduced Judith Therianos, 52, into having sex with him in the woods nearby the liquor store they purchased from. Therianos was killed during or immediately after the act. But it didn’t end there.

Johnson took Therianos’ credit card and used it to buy himself a meal at a nearby Waffle House, and thereafter returned to Therianos’ corpse in the woods to copulate with for hours. Thankfully, Johnson was charged with her murder the following month.
